“Don’t judge me for escaping the stresses and cruelty of the world differently than you do.” ― Dan Pearce, Single Dad Laughing
Back in 2019 I wrote a post, “Distractions Welcome“, for this post I thought I would expand on it.
To keep my mental health stable I like to escape. What I mean by that is this, I find ways to completely unplug myself from everything that resembles life, news, and drama. I disappear into things that will take me out of all stress.
Many years ago there was a story about a man who laughed his way back to health, his name, Norman Cousins.
On the website Laugh Off Life they review Cousins’ novel, “Anatomy of an Illness”, and they write the following;
In his novel, Anatomy of an Illness, Norman Cousins describes his rigorous recovery from ankylosing spondylitis, a painful collagen illness that rendered him immobile, and at its nadir, nearly incapable of moving his jaw.
In the review they include a quote from Norman;
“Hearty laughter is a good way to jog internally without having to go outdoors.”
-Norman Cousins – Anatomy of an Illness
You can download a free PDF copy of Cousins book here.
My forms of escapism includes, watching old t.v. series, such as, “Hogan’s Heroes”, “Carol Burnett”, cartoons, and even documentaries of space exploration. I also at times watch shows dealing with conspiracies, not that I believe them. My favorite are the ones surrounding the assignation the late, President JFK. Anything that takes me into a world that is indistinguishable from what I am dealing with in my life. All this allows me escape, provoke daydreams, or just a good belly laugh..
So dear reader, how do you use escapism from what you are dealing with? I would love for you to share your ways and also for others to read!
I put on headphones crank the music and dance and sing like I’m at a concert.

Yes, music is a great escape!
I am a musician and at times I will sit at my organ with headphones on and just play for hours.
Thank you for sharing today! Hope I will hear from you again! You are always welcome hear!

I like watching late night comedy shows, specifically The Late Show and The Daily Show. Global and CTV, respectively, have them available to stream on demand on their websites, so I watch them that way.

Watching shows on demand is the best. You can pick a time that is convenient for your schedule.

My favorite escape is to go driving through the country with some good music to look for great photos. But if I’m not being deliberate in my choices I tend to just keep doing more. Being crazy busy is that “gutter” that I keep getting pulled back into.
My mind won’t allow me to watch movies too often but I have a love for audio books because my hands can still work allowing my mind to listen 🙂

I use escapism a lot as well. Honestly, with the world the way it is at the moment, I can barely watch or read anything raw or emotional. The news is right out. I tend to read books that I can predict the ending of, and I watch very light comedy tv or documentaries. I also really like informational YouTube. Working out with loud music is also a great escape. Thanks for the reminder and encouragement that this is a legitimate and needed form of self care.

I also love to escape into the TV. I love supernatural horror movies. Anything to take me away from normal life. I always feel guilty when I have to just disappear fir a while when my depression is bad. I do t like to talk about it, I like to escape to another world until I feel ready to face the real world again. It’s really helpful to know others do that too. Thank you 🙏🏻
