Feel Inspired?

You’re always going to write and draw inspiration from things that you’re feeling, things that you’ve felt. It’s kind of impossible not to unless you’re writing a song and there’s an exact scenario that you’re trying to write a song for. Harry Styles

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done: and there is no new thing under the sun.[emphasis mine]

I read quite a few blog posts each and every day, the one thing that stands out and amazes me is, where does everyone find so much inspiration. No two posts are the same, whether in structure, wording, style, category.

So I ask myself where do you find inspiration?

  • Art
  • Music
  • Poetry
  • Television
  • News
  • Reading
  • Dreams
  • Nightmares
  • Personal Life
  • Experiences
  • Friend

As you can see the above list is quite lengthy, I am sure there are others that can be added.

Sometimes I find myself struggling in this category, like today I started a post with a certain subject only to realize I have written about it not that long ago. Therefore this post came from that moment.

So dear reader I would ask you to take a moment and tell me in the comment area where do you find your inspiration?

Dealing With Mental Blocks

“Don’t let mental blocks control you. Set yourself free. Confront your fear and turn the mental blocks into building blocks.”
― Dr Roopleen,Words to inspire the winner in YOU

I have sat in front of my laptop over the last several days with the task of writing in mind.  I would start a post only to find myself half way through hitting the delete button.  I just couldn’t keep my train of thought focused, found myself wandering in my thoughts.

I am realizing that I am not alone in this way, mental blocks, writer’s block are very common even for the best authors.

Mental Block –

… [I]t can also be an inability to continue or complete a train of thought, as in the case of writer’s block. In the case of writer’s block, many find it helpful to take a break and revisit their topic. [source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_block]

I found on Google some suggestions in tackling these mental blocks.  Here is what I found:

7 Unexpected Ways to Get Around Mental Blocks
  1. Freewrite. When you are feeling stuck, open up a new Word doc, and start writing about whatever is on your mind. …
  2. Tackle smaller tasks first. …
  3. Change your environment. …
  4. Learn something new. …
  5. Revisit past experiences. …
  6. See what your friends are up to. …
  7. Analyze other people’s ideas.

So dear reader I thought I would share with you something I am sure many have experienced. I am going to try some of the ways mention to overcome mental blocks.

Treasure Hunt?

All emotions, even those that are suppressed and unexpressed, have physical effects. Unexpressed emotions tend to stay in the body like small ticking time bombs—they are illnesses in incubation.”
― Marilyn Van M. Derbur, Miss America by Day

The brain is an amazing organ, it controls the rest of the body.  Communicates with the nervous system, the five senses, etc.,

The thing I find most fantastic is how certain scents, music, words, can trigger my memory, even some that I have not thought about in years.  Some of those thoughts I have pushed to the back of my brain because I just didn’t want to deal with them.

My memory sometimes works overboard, I can remember things that even the ones that were also there cannot recall that incident.

Pent up emotions like anger, resentment can mess with our digestive system. Other emotions like regret can keep me in a state of fixation, can’t move forward, too easy to move backwards.  So, just stuck in one place!

There are times when I question certain memories whether they are real or just something I have dreamed, a creation of my imagination.

I find myself drifting between the now and the memories that seem to rise to the top.  With some they bring back times when I was happy, the days of singing with my grandfather, the days of singing with my sister as I played the piano.  The other memories I would love to find a way to eradicate them totally.

So, unlike Rand Travis “Digging Up Bones” song, I keep digging through my memories like someone on a treasure hunt.

2020 Expectations

I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine. Bruce Lee

As a child I had expectations, dreams of what I would do when I grew up. Every child has the same dreams, dreams of success, who they will marry, how many children they will have.

Christmas was a time of great expectations also.  What type of gifts would be under the tree.  Question of if we would get the present I had been hoping for.

Parents have expectations of their kids.  Some try to live vicariously through their children.  I am sure my parents had those same hopes for me.  Well, my father wanted me to take up a trade which was the farthest thing in my plans.  My mother just wanted us to be the best of whatever we decided.

Expectations do not always come to fruition, which can bring about a sense of failure, despair, and the ultimate low, depression.

This year has only a few weeks left in it.  The new year starts fresh, clean, and for most hopeful.  Maybe, our expectation is that we won’t make the same mistakes that we did this year.

I tempered my expectations quite a while ago. I take it one hour at at time, one day, one year at a time.

So, here is to expectations, hopes, and dreams of 2020!
