I have for the past several days taken and worked at my exercises. I am progressing slowly, but some of those things were things that I never thought about when doing them. One of those things is putting on long legged pants. Since I cannot bend I have to use a tool called a “reacher”. I have conquered that task and I was elated when I did it correctly on the first try.

Yesterday, I made a small step towards being able to go outside. I was able to walk down my ramp to the first landing, then making it back to my living room. I realize that this seems trivial until you have to teach yourself how to do something using a new technique. Each day has caused me to know how I took things for granted when I had two good operating hips.

For instance, I have been shown what a true friend is. I met my best friend in the latter part of the nineties. It was a basic friendship, basically cordial and someone to visit. My friendship with my best friend has grown into more like a family. His mother used to tell people, “he’s my son of another mother” when speaking about me. He is more than just a friend now for I consider him to be the big brother I never had.

During this whole journey with my hip he has went far and beyond. He has been cooking meals for me and while I was in the hospital he watched my house. He walked through the pre-op along with me which was about six hours. I tell him many times a day how much I appreciate all that he has done.

I have realized that even the little things deserve our gratitude. Even while in the hospital I always told the nurses how much I admire and am thankful for all the work they do for their patients.

So dear reader, I wonder what little things you are thankful for. Is there something that you have come to the conclusion that you have taken it for granted?

While growing up I never once gave it much thought about my health.  I was physically active.  Even after breaking both arms, I still gave little thought about health.  I would walk across the city in my teen years to see my then girl friend. I walked to the farm where I picked tomatoes to earn money for the school year. Then once there would work a full day picking thirty baskets of tomatoes.
Lately however, I have been thinking about my health more often.  Getting around the house is somewhat a challenge. Walking with a cane, or my walker is an exercise of moving around obstacles.  My pace has become slower and trying to answer the phone is a challenge in and of itself.
My bathroom looks like ones you would see in long term care homes. Just taking a shower sends me into a mild panic. I cannot just step into the tub anymore. First, I take a seat on the bench in the tub.  Then I swing the right leg in, following lifting and slowly moving my other leg into the tub. Grabbing onto grab rails I begin to stand upright, panicking the whole time doing so.  Turning around causes a cold wave of panic for fear of falling.
I no longer cook for myself, not confident that I could handle an emergency, I feel I would not be fast enough to respond to something like a grease fire. So, I am thankful for my best friend for cooking for me. 
Today was different for me. The basics were the same, no major changes to my routine waking up and getting moving. No, it was different with me mentally.  For this time my thinking was about leaving my home and placing myself in a long term care home.  I was feeling like I could no longer truly care for myself.
More and more just doing the smallest and simplest things, getting up to warm up a cup of coffee is a fight that leaves me windless.
So dear reader, if you have good health, be thankful for it. Work to keep it that way, for it can be taken from you ever so slowly.  For those who already have physical challenges my sympathies are with you.

A Thought Of Gratefulness

I decided today that I would change the focus.  With everything that is happening around the world, country, neighborhood, backyard, it is so easy to be distraught. Yes, I sometimes am guilty of listening to too much news.

Other times I am focused on myself, depression, boredom, lack of interest in many areas. I find that when I am in that vein of thought it can turn into a never ending cycle, one that is hard to break free from.

This morning as is many mornings my dog waits to hear me moving in the bedroom.  She lays near the hallway just waiting for me to come her way.  She then proceeds to stand up, tail wagging, she knows there is a treat for her if she waits.  There isn’t a day go by that I don’t laugh at something she does.

Also I am so grateful for my best friend. He is a big help at this time with doing things that I cannot do because of mobility issues.  We sit and visit, if there is a hockey game we will watch, also when there is curling you can be sure we are watching.

I look around me and I really cannot complain, food to eat, clothes to wear, a roof above my head, and many other things.

I know that there are many at this time who are facing tremendous pressures, lack of finances to pay the rent, buy food. Also facing a horrible decision of whether to send their children to school.

Truly my heart goes out to all those families, friends, co-workers, etc., who have lost someone they love due to this pandemic. I send sincere condolences to them.

So dear reader this writer is so grateful! I also pray for all those going through the battles at this time!

Yesterday was quite the day for me.  I wrote the post “Your Posts Are Valuable” and was completely set back on my heels.  The response was more than I expected. For example, I had barely pushed the ‘publish’ and someone had already hit the ‘like’.

Then during the day I found people who had hit ‘follow’. I met some new citizens of this great WordPress community.

And the thrill that put the cherry on it all was I chatted with quite a few of you.  We chatted about all different aspects of life, my one favorite is children. I love hearing about a baby who is experiencing firsts throughout their first year.

I took break but I just couldn’t stay away from my laptop eager to see if there were more new comments, likes, follows.  To my surprise I spent the largest portion of the day on this blog reading comments, new posts and just enjoying pure dialogue.  It all was so invigorating!

Now for a shocker, when I sat down to write the post all I had in mind was the title. I searched for a quote, found it, then began writing.  It just flowed effortlessly yesterday.

So, I am looking forward in this year to having more days like the one I had yesterday.
